A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is a healthcare professional who works within the medical industry, usually alongside other nurses, doctors, and surgeons, and has passed certain examinations to be registered by their State Licensing Board.

A nurse assistant will most often be found in hospitals and private care facilities where the role requires more people skills than medical skills, but at the same time needing to be able to recognize danger signs with patients and be able to respond calmly to emergency situations.

In larger hospitals, certified nursing assistants will often provide comfort for distraught family and friends whilst trained medical personnel attend to a sick or injured loved one. It may seem that the role isn’t very demanding, but in fact nurse assistants are highly respected within the medical profession for their professionalism and knowledge of procedures.

Often described as the eyes and ears of registered nurses, the certified nurse assistant is expected to be more than just an onlooker, being called on to help in surgery, monitor patients, administer medications, help patients with hygiene and comfort, and much more.

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is also known as a State Tested Nurse Aid (STNA) with the primary difference being federal versus state mandating, although all CNAs are also registered on the same register as the STNAs working in their state of residence.

Nurse assistants must meet certain quality standards of training before being registered, and requires a minimum of 75 hours study and must include 16 hours of training in a supervised clinical environment.

With an aging population, and more emphasis on the quality of life for older members of society, certified nursing assistants will be in demand in a private setting such as retirement villages, and even in the home for elderly clients who need just a little more help.

Opportunities for career advancement are good, with many employers preferring to promote from within existing staff, and nurse aids are often selected for further training and consequential increases in responsibilities.

Many registered nurses began their careers as nurse assistants, mostly because the CNA or STNA is a short course with good prospects for employment, and allows nursing students to work while at the same time studying part-time for their nursing diploma.

To begin the process of becoming a certified nursing assistant, applicants should first contact their state registration board for a list of recognized agencies that offer the CNA or STNA course. If a course isn’t available locally, applicants may be able to arrange to do part of their course online, although they’ll still need to complete the practical training under supervision.

Some nursing homes and health clinics also offer paid training on the job with the offer of a permanent contract on completion of the exam and successful registration as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

The exam is a two part exam with a written part which shouldn’t be too difficult for anyone who has read the required texts since the questions are often based on common sense. Then follows a clinical (practical) part of the test. Prior to registration, all graduating CNAs need to submit to a criminal background check and drug test to screen out undesirable people who should not work in trusted roles with ill or disabled patients.

Getting a nursing assistant certification is one of those really exciting experiences. To pursue a nursing assistant’s certificate you need to take a course specially designed for nursing assistants. The duration of the course varies from four to twelve weeks depending on the requirements of the state it is being conducted in. In all, you need to have 75 hours of training. The course is composed of classroom training, practical application of things learnt in class and clinical training. Clinical generally involves working with actual clients in a medical facility and the work of the trainees is supervised by a registered nursing staff.

Once you complete the course including the clinical, you need to sit for the nursing assistant certification exam. In most of the states, you need to sign up for the test within ninety days of completion of the course according to law. In the exams you are tested on the fundamental concepts that you need to know for the job. You should be well acquainted with the rules of the certified nursing assistant examination in your state before appearing for it.

The requirements for obtaining a nursing assistant certification vary depending on the state you live in but the fundamental structure of the course is similar in all the states. Just like the training course, the certification exam is divided into two parts – written and clinical. In the written part you need to answer questions about basic concepts and procedures that you have learnt in the duration of the course. You can easily clear this exam if you have thoroughly studied your text books and course notes. In the clinical portion of the test, you can be asked to demonstrate your abilities in anywhere from three to five nursing assistant skills you should have mastered during the training. The exam is conducted under the supervision of a state examiner who carefully observes and evaluates the performance of the candidates. The candidates’ performance is evaluated on the basis of their proficiency in the basic activities of a nursing assistant such as hand washing, privacy, handling the patient, grooming, temperature measurement, and changing the beddings. These activities seem very common for us but they play a vital role in these tests. Doing these tasks in the proper way helps to prevent the spread of communicable diseases. Thorough washing of hands is mandatory and it prevents the nursing assistant from contracting any communicable diseases the patients may have. Maintaining the privacy of each patient is also a right of patient and is the important area of medical profession.

You shouldn’t be nervous about appearing for the exam if you have prepared for it well during the training and clinical. Studying in a group with your classmates will help a lot in securing good marks and clearing the examination. Having regular group discussions helps a lot in clearing any doubts you ay have about the exams. It is also quite helpful to appear for online exams in order to test the level of your understanding. State examiners also observe your composure and the way you perform under pressure as nursing assistants need to work under stress and they should not get nervous in any situation. The nursing assistant certificate is a vital tool to get a job as a nursing assistant. So prepare well for the certification exam as you need to complete certain tasks within a specified time interval.

The job of a nursing assistant is vital in a medical facility as they take care of the day to day needs of the patients. Generally the patients need the assistance in bathing, feeding and dressing. Apart from these duties the nursing assistants are also expected to provide emotional support to the patients. Often, the nursing assistants also help other medical staffs in their jobs by setting up the equipment and getting the patients ready for surgery and sometimes in diagnostic activities.

During their training, nursing assistants work without being paid for it to get the practical experience they need to enter the medical field. The starting salary of nursing assistants can be very low. After some time, the salary gradually increases proportional to the experience and performance of the nursing assistant. A nursing assistant in United States gets a salary of about $25,000 which works out to a monthly salary of about $2000 on average. The salary also depends on the organization in which one is working. A major benefit of joining a medical institution is that they also provide insurance and retirement plans for their employees.

If you compare this salary with that of a licensed nurse, which is $43,000, you may feel that there is a huge difference between the two. You should understand that a licensed nurse holds greater responsibility and requires a higher level of educational qualification. This difference in salary can sometimes makes nursing assistants feel that they are not paid enough.

Many medical facilities have a policy to decide the salary of its employees on the basis of their performance and the experience they have had in that job. They understand the hard work that goes into being a nursing assistant and are aware of the vital role played by nursing assistants in medical services. So, they try to provide the best facilities they can offer to the nursing assistants. Because of the huge pay difference, some people skip the nursing assistant certificate program and try to directly get a job at a higher post. But for those who can’t afford to pay for their higher education a nursing assistant’s job is a good option as they can earn while studying. It also provides hands on experience in the medical field which can be quite useful for higher level courses.

The job of nursing assistants is tougher as compared to that of nurses. Further, nurses have a relatively higher salary and this can often cause nursing assistants to develop resentment towards the nursing staff. The hospital administration should understand these issues and they should take care of the problems faced by nursing assistants. These days the government is making efforts to increase the rate of pay for nursing assistants. A good pay is not the only thing that nursing assistants want, they also need to be shown the respect and appreciation they deserve for their hard work. These days the number of persons leaving the profession of nursing assistant is greater than that of any other profession, so all of us must give due respect to the hard work that is done by nursing assistants.

There are infinitely many options for a person trying to decide what career he wants to have. In this profession, there is no chance of being bored of the job because things keep changing daily. Every day has its own set of new tasks and challenges.

The career of nursing assistant is extremely rewarding for those who want to enter the medical field and to help others. It is a great opportunity to learn new things and give help to people who are in need of it. Many things that are vital in the career of nursing assistant are not taught in a nursing assistant training course. There are many precautionary measures that are not taught well in such courses. In fact, even many employers do not give due importance to the precautions that have to be taken in the medical field. So, some tips on precautionary measures you have to take could help you a lot to build up your career as a successful nursing assistant.

For beginners, the toughest job is to take the directions from the other medical staff in the hospital. There are many nurses, each with their own style of working. So, sometimes the expected result may not be achieved. Therefore, it is the duty of a nursing assistant to maintain a balance in such. If at any time, such a scenario develops in the medical facility it is your duty to inform the head nurse. You need to make it clear how the nursing staff is not working in coordination with each other and the desired results are not being seen .

A nursing assistant’s life is always busy with many responsibilities such as bathing, dressing, and feeding the patients. You must be well prepared to perform all these tasks while handling the stress involved. You should take care of the patient in the best way possible and ensure that they are comfortable at all times. You need to be aware of the individual requirements of all the patients.

Nursing assistants are at a high risk to contract communicable diseases as they need to assist all kind of patients. You receive training in the nursing assistant’s courses on how to prevent the spread of such communicable diseases but to apply them practically something really different. Always use rubber gloves whenever the job involves contact with the bodily fluids of the patient and wash your hands with soap and water frequently. When cleaning the soiled clothing and beddings of the patients, use disinfectant to prevent the spread of communicable diseases. Another thing you should be careful about is not to abuse the patient in any way, be it physically, mentally, verbally or sexually. Sometimes you may feel stressed out and in that situation you must be capable of dealing with the burnout. Taking care of these things will enable you to have an enjoyable career as a nursing assistant.

Nursing assistants have the hardest and most laborious job in the medical profession. It is the responsibility of nursing assistants to aid, comfort and support the patients. They have a better knowledge of the patients’ needs and requirements than the nursing staff. They are the ones who can suggest the best and most suitable course of action for the treatment of the patients. They also assist the nursing and medical staff in their duties.

The workload of nursing assistants is quite high, and therefore they sometimes feel stressed. Most of the people involved in nursing assistant profession are happy with their jobs, but still, they might feel that they are being taken for granted. The duty of the nursing assistants is really hard and most of the activities take place behind the scenes. Sometimes the patients and employers may not realize how much the nursing assistants contribute to overall goals of the medical facility and to the medical profession as a whole. Because of this the relation of nursing assistants with other staffs may become strained. Therefore the patients, medical staffs and the medical facility need to recognize the efforts of nursing assistants.

Most of the patients and their family show their appreciation to the nursing assistants by sending a thank you note or letter and this gesture of gratitude is sufficient for the nursing assistants. Any form of appreciation that they receive helps them to keep themselves motivated because it helps them realize that their work made a difference for those people. Sometimes, people also give them gifts such as candy, flowers or cards to show their appreciation for the help provided by nursing assistants.

Nursing assistants are sometimes under the impression that they are not appreciated by the nursing staff they work under. People in the nursing staff sometimes only point out the negative aspects of the services provided by the nursing assistants. They should make an effort to show their appreciation verbally. The nursing staff can also make them feel appreciated by asking them about how their job is going and inviting them for discussions on how to handle patient issues. All this can go a long way in making them feel appreciated.

Employers have a vital role in making nursing assistants feel appreciated. They should understand the fact that the demand for good nursing assistants is very high and need to work hard to keep them in the medical facility. The way the employers interact with nursing assistants can set the tone for the rest of the staff.

Working as a nursing assistant can provide you with a great opportunity to explore the field of medicine. As a nursing assistant, your primary duty is to take care of patients and deal with their family and the nursing staff in the medical facility. In the course of your duty you will be required to work with many medical professionals including physicians, X-Ray technicians, emergency staff and surgery specialists. As you need to work with people in almost every department, it is vital for you to have excellent communication skills to work as nursing assistant. A nursing assistant needs to fulfill the basic needs of the patients including feeding, dressing, and bathing. A nursing assistant is expected to adapt his way of working according to the individual needs of every patient. You are not only providing the patients with physical support, but you also provide emotional support to their family.

In the hospital, you are required to deal with the nursing staff on a daily basis and most of them are medical professionals. These professionals are dependent on you to know the patients’ details. They follow the patient chart recorded by a nursing assistant as a guide to the patient’s condition. In the hospital, the physicians are almost totally dependent on you, therefore it is your responsibility to observe the patients carefully and make an accurate record of all your observations. A physician may approach you to know the patient’s details and you need to explain about the patient and the problem. The things you notice about the patient can help the physician in the patient’s treatment. For example, suppose the doctor has prescribed a new medicine to the patient. Then it is your duty to report to the doctor whether the medicine is taking effect or not.

While working as a nursing assistant, you will have many opportunities to interact with a variety of other professionals from all the different fields of medicine. This is because the patient’s treatment may require the services of more than one department. In such cases, it is your responsibility to furnish any details on the patient that may be required. For example, you may need to take the patient for X-Ray prior to the surgery. There will be many specialists to check the patient. When you work with the emergency staff, you need to be very sincere and careful. You must know when to call the emergency staff in case the patient’s condition deteriorates. You must be well prepared with all the details about where to call, who to call and what to say about the patient. You have to be capable of explaining the situation clearly and quickly when communicating with the emergency staff. It is essential to have good communication skills to work efficiently. If you perform all these duties well, you may become a good nursing assistant who is capable of handling critical situations effectively.

The main duty of a nursing assistant is to provide the best care for patients in every possible way. Nursing assistants try to fulfill all the basic necessities of the patients. They also maintain a record of the medical condition of the patient and monitor their vital signs at all times. As nursing assistants constantly deal with patients it is imperative for them to be aware of the patients’ rights. These rights should not be violated by nursing assistants in any way.

All patients have the right to have detailed information about their health right from the time they get admitted to the medical facility. Sometimes, as a nursing assistant, you may face a situation in which you may not be qualified to provide the information that the patient is asking for. In that case you must help the patient by directing the patient’s queries to the staff that can answer them. You need to record all the details about the patients in their chart. Doctors and nurses are mainly responsible for dealing with the patients and their families so you don’t have to worry much about them.

It is important for you to know that it is the right of a patient to refuse any treatment if he wishes so. In such cases being a nursing assistant can be one of the most difficult jobs. If they don’t wish to be assisted in any way, you should try to be helpful as far as possible while respecting their wishes. If the patient wants to leave the medical facility, you need to inform your supervisors or the administration of the medical facility.

Patients also have the right to file a complaint if they are not satisfied with the services being provided to them. It is your duty to clearly explain the procedure to file a complaint to them. If the patient voices a compliant to you, you need to assist them in carrying out the official procedures to file a formal complaint. You must make them aware of policies and procedures followed in the medical facility. Another important thing you should take care of is to ensure that the patient does not experience physical or mental abuse while staying in the medical facility. If the patient has any complaints related to such matters, you may be fired from the job. In case you know about any incidents of physical or mental abuse of patients, you must inform your supervisor immediately so that proper action can be taken.

A nursing assistant must accord the patients with proper respect. The personal information of patients must be kept confidential. Another thing you have to be careful about is the patient’s right to practice his religion. The patient may have many visitors during the course of his treatment. It is important for you to know how to work with the patients in such situations. Nursing assistants need to respect the patients and their individuality. This helps in creating a good understanding between the patients and nursing assistants. Devote as much time as required for a patient and perform your duties to the best of your abilities.

Often, people who are certified as nursing assistants become unhappy with their jobs. This is because they have to work very hard, ignoring the scheduled holidays and deal with the internal staff of the hospital (which can sometimes be really difficult). In spite of this, the payment they get is not satisfactory according to their work. They don’t even get the appreciation they deserve in their work. So, they often become frustrated with the hospital environment.

These days a career in home health care services is becoming a grand alternative to being a nursing assistant. It provides more freedom and the opportunity to help others at a more personal level. Home health care services offer care and assistance for those who want the privacy and comfort of their own home. Here the duties of nursing assistants are similar to those in hospitals such as feeding, bathing and dressing the patients.

Nursing assistants interested in these services can find a job via a home health agency. The agency makes a contract with the patient or their family to provide them with home health services. They then appoint nursing assistants to work at the patient’s home rather than in a hospital. In contracts such as these, the nursing assistants need to be careful about agreeing to the terms and conditions that the agency sets for them. Sometimes, the nursing assistant might have to take care of payment of bills, picking up medicines and taking the patient to scheduled appointments. Sometimes they may be required to take care of house keeping and cooking too.

The benefit of home health care services is that you can follow your own schedule and you can modify it according to your own convenience. Of course, it has to be acceptable to the supervisor and the patient. It is easy to customize the schedule in case of holidays or other events.

A nursing assistant working in home health services has to be alert in supervision of the patient at all times. It is his responsibility to see to it that the patient is comfortable and well cared for. If the condition of the patient worsens he has the complete right to interact with the patient’s family and to take appropriate action. He has to be intense, organized, motivated and able to work on his own without the need of constant supervision. His every decision is scrutinized in detail so he has to act wisely in discharging his duties. If the patient is dissatisfied with the services, then he might lose his job and therefore be sincerity is a must.

The amount of money that a nursing assistant earns in home health services is greater than that in hospitals. On average, the pay differs by $2.25 per hour. This is because for a higher fee, a better quality of service can be expected. Usually, patients do not feel comfortable if their assistants are changed frequently as they prefer not to have too many people at their home. It is the duty of the agency to ensure that there is a good understanding between the patient and assistant. Getting a job with a good agency usually guarantees good money, respect, and job satisfaction.

Diseases that can be transferred from one person to another are called communicable diseases. These include diseases like common cold, flu, measles, tuberculosis, HIV, chicken pox and lice. For people having medical problems, the immune system gets weakened and makes them more susceptible to communicable diseases. These diseases can spread through saliva, urine, stool, blood or other bodily fluids. Sneezing also transmits the diseases like common cold.

Being a nursing assistant it is your main responsibility to avoid the spread of communicable diseases. The simplest way to do this is to wash your hands often as you shift from one patient to another. As most of the germs are removed by soap water, nursing assistants are required to wash their hands more often other people because they are constantly in contact with the patients.

It is the duty of nursing assistant to inform the supervisor immediately if they develop the symptoms of any communicable diseases. Then it is the responsibility of the medical facility to take action for the treatment of that disease. You are recommended to stay at home and do not come for the duty till you have the symptoms of the disease. In case of some diseases, you can continue work provided you use a respirator.

There are some communicable diseases that can be cured with the help of antibiotics. These include strep throat and common cold. In such diseases, you can continue your duty but do not forget to wash your hands frequently and take immunizations and vitamins regularly. Knowledge of such communicable diseases is very important for nursing assistants as they need to be very careful and aware of their work environment. If one patient has a communicable disease that has the potential to spread to other patients, it is the duty of nursing assistant to prevent the spread of that disease. Of course, if the nursing assistant himself has a communicable disease, it will definitely put the patients who they are taking care of at risk.

Different medical facilities have different procedures to follow in order to handle spread of communicable diseases. You need to be trained in identifying them and bringing them to the notice of the medical staff. It is the duty of the training agencies to train each nursing assistant in these matters as they are essential to ensure proper care of the patients. Nursing assistants are regularly in contact with patients. So, there is a high probability of them contracting communicable diseases. Wearing rubber gloves while dealing with the patient can prevent the spread of these diseases. Being a nursing assistant you need to keep yourself healthy and take safety measures as far as possible in order to protect yourself from communicable diseases.

If you are in search of a good career in the medical field, a career as a nursing assistant is one of the many good choices. If you enjoy helping others and want to get a job immediately after the completion of your course, then a nursing assistant’s career is the perfect choice for you. You have to take a license to work as a nursing assistant after the completing the course. The rules for issuing a nursing assistant’s license can vary according to the state in which you live. Basically, you need to pass a background check because it is necessary to ensure the safety of other staffs and patients. If you have been involved in illegal activities in your past, then it is very unlikely for you to get the license. The nature of illegal activities taken into consideration can vary from state to state.

The nursing assistant certification course is usually conducted by health care facilities, schools and colleges. If you are interested in this field you may contact these services for the upcoming session. It normally takes four to ten weeks to complete the course. The duration can vary according to the institute offering the course. After the course you need to undergo clinical training. The clinical involves hands on practice in real working conditions. To complete the course, you need to work for at least 75 hours according to the federal law, under the supervision of a registered nurse.

After the completing the nursing assistant course and clinical, you need to sit for the certified nursing assistant exam. This exam is periodically conducted in each state.

The exam is divided into two categories – written and clinical. In written exams you need to answer the questions related to the theoretical knowledge needed to become a nursing assistant and clinical involves evaluation of your work under the supervision of a registered professional in the medical field. Your nursing assistant instructor will tell you the things you should know for the exam. It will also be beneficial for you if you make your own study group and take part in online practice tests. It helps in building up your confidence ahead of the test.

You will get the license if you fulfill all the requirements which are designed to ensure that you are properly trained in all aspects of being a nursing assistant. You should be aware of the policies and procedures in the hospital. In the nursing assistant training course you will learn the basics you need to know to work as nursing assistant and you will be trained by professionals before entering real service. As the demand for nursing assistants is very high these days, you may ensure your career by obtaining nursing assistant certification. In case of any doubts, you are free to pose your queries to your state medical board via phone or online.

If you want to be a successful nursing assistant then it helps a lot to have good communication skills. The profession of nursing assistant is intricately related to the daily activities of the patients and even their family and friends. You need to maintain a good working relationship with the other medical staff in the course of your service. Therefore you need to establish a good rapport with different people. As you are employed in the medical facility, you need to be in constant communication with physicians, lab technicians, emergency services and surgery units. The ability to communicate will make your job easier and you will be able to establish a good relationship with the other staff.

During the course of duty, you are required to maintain records of all the patients, which are referred to by the nursing staff. You have to be sure to document the correct information about the patients. This includes the vital signs and any changes you observe in the condition of the patient. It is your job to inform the medical staff if the patient under your observation needs some emergency care. In this case, it is vital to have good communication skills to quickly and clearly explain what is required. You should not hesitate to talk to the medical and nursing staff in the hospital.

Nursing assistants have to interact with the patient regularly and effectiveness of the other medical staffs depends on the observations made by the nursing assistants. Nurses and doctors get the information about the condition and history of the patient from the nursing assistant. So, as a nursing assistant, you need to pay attention to each and every activity of the patient. The most common complaint that patients have about nursing assistants is they are not confidential, so one has to keep this in mind at all times.

Many of the nursing assistants think that nurses have the opinion that the information and report they provide to the nursing staffs are not credible because of lack of proper training and education. Nursing assistants often feel that the nursing staffs and medical staffs are ignoring the report provided by them. This may cause the working staff to get divided and lose interest in the patients. It is the duty of the employers to eliminate such conditions of misunderstanding. They need to employ strict rules and regulations that will maintain the discipline among the staff and ensure that each department respects the work of the other.

If the employer makes all the departments aware of the responsibility of others, it can help to eliminate many problems. If they show concern about the work of nursing assistants and assure them they are getting the respect they deserve, it can help them to maintain good relations with the other staff. Everyone in the hospital needs to recognize the abilities of each other. This leads to better quality of service in all departments. Everybody is important in the organization and you need to play a supportive role in helping them. Maintaining good relations plays a vital role in the career development and success of a nursing assistant. So, it is essential to have good communication skills.

Many people think that the work of nursing assistant is grateful and this is true if you feel great when you get the chance to help others. But sometimes this very job becomes a great stress and frustration because there is always short in the number of assistants working in the medical facility. The load of work is therefore very high and you need to deal the issues with medical staffs and patients simultaneously. Sometimes you need to deal the cases of dying patients and all these works are really stressful for the mental and physical activities of your own. This may lead to the burnout to the nursing assistants and they will no longer be interested in their profession they were once interested on.

It is essential to manage your stress to work effectively and efficiently. To help you in these situations there are several support groups where you can discuss your feelings which may be good or bad. It is the best way to manage the stress and other factors that your job brings, and you can create new relationship and get the support from others in the nursing assistant profession. Sometimes you can provide them the similar support.

The supporting groups are formed in many ways and it is not a difficult task. It is just about a meeting where people share their feelings about the profession. You should join the groups which are only for the nursing assistants. This will help you to meet the people from same profession as yours and sharing the ideas and views with the person in same field is really effective. In the discussions you need to make sure why it is necessary to establish such kind of supporting groups.

The group meetings can also be decided by the members and some groups meet weekly, while others may meet in two weeks. The topic for each meeting should be of interest to all the members and you need to raise such topics among many problems with the nursing assistant. The group should allow each member to bring any topic under some ground rules. The outcome of the meeting should be positive for you and it must be advantageous for you to reduce the stress and burnouts.

If the group is small and its effectiveness is not seen among you people, you should try to collect all the nursing assistants in your community and make the group larger one. Meeting large number of people from same field can give better conclusion than that with smaller one. You may use the church as the meeting place when the church is not in use. You may request your medical facility to provide the support to such groups.

There are some online support groups as well and these are becoming popular between the nursing assistants. Although these are not the face to face meeting, you can share your problems and sometimes give the suggestions to others also. These groups are of larger size as the people from all over the nation are joining these groups. The online services are usually free to join and you can take advantage of free resources that will help you a lot in handling the different situations. A nursing assistant need a reliable support system to offset the effects of stress and burnout so it is better to join such groups.

Sadly, the abuse of patients by nursing assistants can take many forms including physical, sexual and emotional abuse. This is a nationwide problem and most medical facilities many take precautions against the occurrence of such incidents. The first step they take is to perform background checks on new employees and they may be banned from working if they are found to have been involved in activities such as domestic violence, driving under the influence and any form of harassment. Any past record of illicit activities may stop you from working as a nursing assistant.

As the demand of nursing assistants in the market is very high, often the background check for nursing assistants is not taken as seriously as it should be. This sometimes results in employment of people that have been involved in criminal activities in the past. In many of the states the employers are also held responsible for any abuse occurring in their organization. This may help the background check to be carried out more strictly.

Sexual abuse of patients by nursing assistants includes the allegations of inappropriate touching and sexual intercourse. This mainly happens in case of male nursing assistants who are responsible for bathing the patients. It is the duty of the nurses to supervise the nursing assistants. When the nursing assistant is alone with the patient, the nurses may make surprise visits.

There are some cases where the nursing assistants abuse the patients physically. This mainly happens in cases when the nursing assistant is not satisfied with his job or salary. Frustration and other overwhelming circumstances may be the cause of physical abuse. There are some cases where the nursing assistants hit the patient for soiling the clothes and beddings. The elderly people are often afraid of reporting such behavior of the nursing assistant.

Another common type of abuse by the nursing assistants is verbal abuse that can range from teasing to threats. There are some cases where the nursing assistants are accused of stealing the patients’ possessions. They may be reported for the theft of cash, jewelry, foods and sometimes dietary supplements. It is very difficult to prove who did it because there are many people coming in contact with the patient including the doctors and nurses working in the medical facility.

These shameful activities carried out by certain individuals are publicized by the media like television, newspaper and internet and can give the entire profession a bad name. The job of a nursing assistant is a difficult one, and they should do their best to take the responsibility to protect the patients.

Many people know about nursing assistants but they don’t know the details of their profession and their duties. Being a nursing assistant one needs to work efficiently whilst maintaining the best quality standards. So, many people involved in this profession tend to drop out of it. A person working as a nursing assistant must have excellent communication skill because it involves interaction with patients, their family members, and many other medical professionals in the course of their duty. So, good communication skills are a must for a nursing assistant.

Most people are familiar with the common duties of nursing assistants such as feeding, dressing, and bathing the patient. But this is just the tip of the iceberg as it does not include even 25% of the actual work. There are various duties of a nursing assistant which are not as well known as others. The nature of services depends on the medical facility where one works. There are, however some common duties that are similar everywhere.

The most common duty of nursing assistants is to bathe the patients. Depending on the condition of the patient, it may be done in the shower or even in bed. Other duties involve maintaining personal hygiene such as brushing teeth, applying makeup, combing hair, shaving and catering to other needs of the patient. While working, a nursing assistant should be aware of the temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure of the patient at all times. The information recorded by them in the patient’s chart is seen by the other medical professionals including the nursing staff.

Some of the patients may require assistance while eating food. One needs to keep records of all the food items and drinks the patient has consumed in the individual’s chart. Some of the patients also need vitamins and other supplements. Everything they take has to be recorded systematically. The duty of the nursing assistants also includes bringing the patients capable of eating by themselves to the dining area. Grooming them and helping them in and out of their wheelchair is also an important duty of a nursing assistant.

A nursing assistant has to take care of the patient’s hygiene by changing their beddings and other materials used by the patients that might need change or replacement. He has to document the behavior of each patient and these records are essential for other medical professionals. If one keeps a sharp eye on each and every detail, one can successfully handle this job. Apart from these services, it is the duty of a nursing assistant to provide emotional support to the patients and their families and to make the patient feel as comfortable as possible. So, the profession of nursing assistant needs a fair amount of dedication and sincerity, which can go a long way in painting the faces of patients with happiness.

These days, employees need to undergo background checks in order to ensure the safety of whom they serve. A nursing assistant will also have to undergo these background checks, before they can sign up with any institution. You have to pass through these tests in most cases, as it is important to adhere to the rules and regulations of the state in which you are employed

The background checks that you need to undergo vary depending on the state in which you want t work, or the institution you want to join. In some states, you may be allowed to become a nursing assistant only if you don’t have a criminal background. This means you will be barred from employment if you have committed any kind of crimes. In some states the rules and regulations are stricter. Any person who has been involved in domestic violence, drunk driving, nuisance, delinquency, or any other offense cannot enter in the medical field to work as medical staff. From the statistical analysis, it has been seen that a persons with a criminal record before joining the medical facility are mainly involved in the theft and other abuse-related offences.

The background check of an employee includes many things regarding the past life of the person. Some of the employing agencies just go through your illicit history, while some may go into greater detail. Your education status is also checked and previous job experiences are also considered. In order to verify your previous employments, your references may be contacted. Some employers may conduct a credit rating, as there are some people who provide the employers with false information. These days, the employers also investigate a person’s vehicle record. Your medical history is not checked, but you may have to pass a physical examination in order to become a nursing assistant.

Before conducting a background check, the employers decide the kind of check that is needed. You need to agree to provide some important information regarding your past before joining the agency. Background checks are usually done only when you have been shortlisted for a job. So, it is very important to give a positive response if an employer is interested in your personal history.

By now, you must have understood the importance of undergoing these background checks. If you have got a criminal record, there is a strong possibility that you might not get the job. Also, you should lie about your work experience, as there is high probability of getting caught. There is a lot of demand for nursing assistants, so you may even get the job if you don’t have much work experience. You need to be honest if you want to get the job easily and you may be offered some training also. If you get any negative results on your background checks, and the employer does not employ you, then they need to specify the reason for doing so. They must provide you with a satisfactory answer and if they don’t, you can take legal action, as no one is allowed to spoil your career without having a strong reason behind their actions.

Nursing assistants are an important part of the medical infrastructure. The main services they provide are bathing, feeding, and dressing of patients. The level to which their assistance is required varies from patient to patient, depending on their needs. Nursing assistants are also expected to assist the nurses and other medical staff in the course of treatment of the patient.

To work as a nursing assistant, a nursing assistant certification is required. These certification programs are available in most medical facilities and colleges. The duration of the course may vary from one to three months depending on the institution. The duration also depends on the curriculum and on how many hours per day the course is conducted.

In these courses the basic fundamentals of taking care of patients in a professional manner are taught. The performance of the students is evaluated by the licensed nurses, both during the training period and during the course of regular employment. In the training, one is taught how to care for the patients, both physically and psychologically. The course is fundamentally for the preparation of the Nursing Assistant Certification exams. One learns the different aspects of nursing from text books as well as through hands on training. The course also focuses on improvement of communicating skills of the student. Good communication skills play a vital role for nursing assistants as they need to be able to effectively communicate with the patients, their family and other medical professionals.

In hands on training, the student gets the chance to employ the concepts he has learnt in the classroom. He has to work with medical devices that are used in the day to day working of a hospital. He learns to note the vital signs of patients such as the temperature, blood pressure and other details. During the training period the student has to work in a medical facility, which is major part of the training. This is known as clinical training or simply ‘clinical’. During the course of clinical the student faces real patients and he needs to handle the patients in a proper way. In clinical, the students work in groups of two to five people. By this they learn about teamwork and about dealing with the patients.

Some students are frightened by the very mention of clinical but it is the best opportunity for them to fully understand the theoretical knowledge they have acquired and learn their role as a nursing assistant. A student is not paid for the work during the clinical hours of training. The medical staff is aware that he does not have the experience in the field and therefore they do their best to explain all the things that should be kept in mind. A nursing assistant must understand each thing, but if he does not, he can always take the help of the medical staff that is training him.

For hardworking and compassionate people, a career as a nursing assistant is really rewarding. The people who enjoy helping others find this profession very interesting and they are show a lot of dedication to their work. Although they work hard, what they do is not appreciated by other medical professionals. Many people choose not to work in this field for a long time period of time for the same reason. Among all the professions in medicine, the turnover rate is highest in the nursing assistant job.

People get the nursing assistant certificate not just for the money, but also because they are sincerely interested in the job. The cost of completing the training course for becoming a nursing assistant is not very high and the time required for it is also short. So, a lot of students enroll for these courses. As it is with human nature, every human being wants to be respected and appreciated professionally and personally. Same with the nursing assistants, and they end up disliking their job when they don’t feel respected and appreciated by other medical professionals. As a result of this, they end up leaving their service. On the other hand, we can also see many nursing assistants performing their duty very sincerely, ipso facto, some people enjoy this profession and some do not.

The job of a nursing assistant is full of responsibilities and they need to maintain a good relationship with the rest of the staff. The most common problem faced by them is that they are not paid well, as people consider their job to be an entry level job. You do not get sufficient pay to live a good life, you don’t get as much as the nursing professionals get. You need to face different situations with your patients and help them with their basic needs like feeding, bathing, and dressing them, which is really not an easy task. The nursing assistants also need to assist the medical staffs in the course of treatment and therefore they find themselves running short on time and high on stress.

There are many patients and it gets really difficult tolerate their behavior some times. If you take proper care of them, you are praised, but this can be really difficult as there are many patients to look after at the same time. So, the rest of the medical staff may get angry with the nursing assistants and think that they are not doing their job well. There is very high risk of both emotional and physical abuse and this can add to the already high stress levels. There are many incidents when you face dying people and even dead ones and you need to keep your feelings and emotions within yourself.

The nursing assistants who are dedicated to their work and feel a responsibility towards their duties may even feel burnout with their job. They will slowly lose interest in their jobs and in other activities too. The stress of continuous work for many hours, without rest causes this situation to arise. Therefore you must make a decision, if to choose this career or not according to your capabilities in handle such situations. If you have decided to choose this carrier you do not need to worry as you are now somehow familiar with the disadvantages that will help you protect yourself. You must be able to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the profession and then reach to the conclusion, as to which carrier you want to choose.

As a nursing assistant, you will be exposed to a lot of practices which are currently followed in the medical profession. Therefore, a nursing assistant needs to maintain confidentiality in all aspects and must be aware of the importance, of this confidentiality, to the job. The training of the nursing assistants is sufficient enough to teach them about the policies and procedures involved in this line of work. A nursing assistant should take proper care, follow all the rules and regulations, and not discuss these procedures outside of their facility. They should not discuss crucial information about the institution, on the outside, as it may compromise the safety and security of the patients. A nursing assistant also needs to take care of the safety of the patients during natural disasters.

The patient who is under your care has a right to privacy, so you must not discuss their cases with anyone, except those involved with their treatment. Your confidentiality will be judged in the situations if someone in the facility asks you why you have allowed someone else in there. Every patient in your medical facility has the right to have their privacy protected. So you should not divulge any information as that is considered as a violation of the code of conduct in medical practice. Divulging the private information of the patient to others may cause you to lose your job and in severe cases, nursing assistant certification.

The communicable diseases that the patients may be carrying, can surface in your medical facility therefore it is important for a nursing assistant to follow the policies and procedures decided by the institution. Being a nursing assistant, you must talk about such confidential information outside of your facility, as it may cause some patients to leave, even if it is against medical advice. The proper place to release such information is an established agency in your facility, which is often the health department. This will help the medical facility to take appropriate action against those kinds of diseases. Sometimes, it is important to release information about some diseases to the public media, such as newspapers, so that people are aware of its presence and they may take preventive measures.

The need for confidentiality is for all the medical staff and particularly, the nursing assistants. It is the duty of a nursing assistant to take care of the patients in the course of which they learn a lot of things about the patients. In such a case, they should not disclose any information regarding the patient to anybody else. Nursing assistant must not release any information that they hear during the private interactions like gossip etc., about anybody else in the staff, as this is may lead to poor working relationships. This can also cause a lot of stress to you, and you must be capable of handling these things along with taking the best care of the patients.

To be a professional nursing assistant you need to protect yourself and the confidentiality will help you to understand the basics of the profession. You must be up to date with the policies of your medical facility and you need to follow them in detail.

Being a nursing assistant, you need to work hard in order to ensure the safety of you patients and you also need to provide them with good quality service. Sometimes, even though you may have done your level best, some of the customers may complain. In all sense of fairness, sometimes this is not fair to the nursing assistants. Many people may carry negative impressions about you. You, therefore, need to take care in order to avoid being blamed in any situation.

The most common complaint about the nursing assistants is that they are always in a hurry. But, a nursing assistant has no option but to do so, as they have a lot of duties to carry out during their shifts, and try to take care of as many patients as they can. Therefore, their methods of doing work seem to be very quick and robotic. It is very important to understand here that you need to maintain personal touch with everyone to complete your duty smoothly, and without complaints. As the patients have paid for the services you need to do as much as you can from your side. You must also realize that this plays a big role in maintaining the reputation of the medical facility and you can have some control over some decisions they make. The services which you might have to render may be as small as like helping them in getting up from the bed, or sitting on a chair or bringing them a pen and paper to write. They may seem small, but they are very highly valued by the patients, and you have to take care not to disappoint them.

You should not make the patient wait for the services they need because it is hard for the patients to make do without these things. A nursing assistant should try and help the patients in any way they can. Some medical emergency cases may disturb your schedule but you need to prioritize your duties, and follow them accordingly. The order priority is very important, e.g., a patient who has fallen down needs the assistance more than the patient who wants a shower. Confidentiality is also an important part of nursing assistant profession therefore you should not tell the patient why you are running late, or any other information of the sort.

Nursing assistant should not discuss the patients among each other as the patients may feel uncomfortable. Chose your words carefully when speaking to a patient, even if you think they are asleep. Talking about unnecessary things around the patients when they are sleeping is not a good thing and it is also a part of complaints.

Many people think that the nursing assistants are not good enough to get the license and they need to work much before they get the license. You have nothing to do with this and the program developers have defined the hours necessary to get the certificate of nursing assistant. You should build the confidentiality and dedicated to the service to get the good praise of patients and the medical facility.

The purpose of a nursing assistant is to provide the best possible care to the patients. He needs to work very hard in order to provide even the most basic services to the patients. Nursing assistants don’t only need to perform their own duties, they are supposed to assist the nurses with any kind of emergency and therefore their job often requires multitasking skills. Ultimately, they are meant to help others and make them feel better. For new professionals in the field of nursing assistant, it is almost always really difficult to handle the situations involving death.

Dealing with death of patients is a common issue for medical professionals and it is even more commonly encountered by those handling care of elderly or critical cases. These issues should be kept in mind before joining such facilities as a nursing assistant. Different people have different views about the death; nursing assistants should avoid taking these situations emotionally as they need to face them frequently in this profession. But nursing assistants should react according to the needs of the family members. For example, if they are religious and praying they need to react accordingly. It is always good to respect the patient’s wishes or those of his family during such situations.

Some nursing assistants get upset with the situations involving death because they feel that it is not something that they joined this profession for. But, if they enjoy helping people, they can a tremendous support for the patients and their families in those critical moments. They have to apply all their efforts to make the patient comfortable. In final hours, the patient’s mouth tends to become very dry and in this situation one needs to give them sips of water or ice chips. They have to apply Vaseline if the patient’s lips start cracking.

A nursing assistant needs to have details about a patient’s medical history and he needs to treat the patient accordingly. He has to constantly monitor the patient’s body temperature, blood pressure and try to make him comfortable by adjusting the beddings, air conditioning and heating as required. Nursing assistants must be observant of signs indicating approaching death such as slowing down of the blood circulation, changes in breathing and blurred vision. All these changes must be recorded in the patient’s chart. He has to inform the nurse if, in his opinion, the situation is getting worse.

When a patient is in the last stages of his life, a nursing assistant must be careful in providing them with the best of care to assure his comfort. The prescribed medications have to be administered sincerely. One can even play music if it makes the patient more comfortable. One can provide them with their favorite books or some passages from the bible. In the final moments, the nursing assistant may even hold their hand to comfort them. In effect, a nursing assistant must be dedicated to fulfill the last wishes of the patient as far as possible.

As the profession of nursing assistants is both rewarding and demanding, those who are interested in this field need to know about some important aspects of this profession. Many people think that the duty of nursing assistants is assisting the patients with feeding, dressing, and bathing only. But in fact, a nursing assistant has much more to do, such as developing a bilateral relationship with the patients and medical staff. They are like family for the patients, and they do many important things like reading for them, helping them to write the letters and even many personal issues.

Sometimes this leads to traumatic experiences, like a patient who you have a good relationship with suddenly dies. A nursing assistant needs to learn to cope up with these feelings. Most medical facilities are aware of these things that happen because of the feeling of loss, which is borne out of true friendship and love. The counseling service helps the nursing assistants to get rid of these problems. In counseling they become familiar with the things that may happen in course of their duty. The counseling can be done by taking the help of senior nursing assistants or other professionals.

The medical facility provides counseling services for the nursing assistants for free because this is vital for nursing assistants, and it helps them do their jobs properly. There are also paid counselors who provide the service by charging some money. You need to know about such situations which may arise in your job by taking either of the services of by reading some books and by browsing the internet. The service of counseling is effective only if the nursing assistants are interested in these things. If you are taking the counseling service you should not share the discussions between you and the counselor with the employer. Generally, nursing assistants do not accept this type of support for the reason they are afraid of their bosses, but they don’t realize that counseling helps them to cope up with these things.

Counseling plays very important role in the medical profession as it helps you to improve your administration skill and helps in setting up the services for the employers. Initially the people hesitate to take the counseling as it costs some money but you must understand the necessity of the counseling in the medical profession, and you must realize how important it actually is. It will improve your overall effectiveness and help you cope up with stress and burnouts. In order for you to carry out your career as a nursing assistant, these counseling services are really helpful.

If the medical facility you are working for does not provide you with these counseling services, then you should look for other service providers. As the nursing assistant profession is fraught with emotion, you should take care of yourself at both physical and emotional levels. Only if you can take care of yourself, will you be able to take care of others, and your service will be appreciated. There are some health insurance programs that offer free counseling services to their customers, so you can take the advantage of those programs as the counseling service may turn out to be costly. Hence the counseling service really helps a nursing assistant to do their work with ease and help them enjoy it.
